ICBC Counselling: How It Works

If you’ve been involved in a car accident in British Columbia, you may be eligible for counselling covered by ICBC. Here’s what you need to know and how to get started.

Who Can Access ICBC Counselling?
Anyone with an active ICBC claim from a recent motor vehicle accident can access counselling services. You don’t need a doctor’s referral for the first sessions, making it simple to get the support you need.

How Many Sessions Are Covered?
Under ICBC’s Enhanced Care program (for accidents on or after May 1, 2021), you’re eligible for a set number of pre-approved counselling sessions in the first 12 weeks after your accident. These sessions are designed to help you cope with stress, anxiety, or trauma related to your accident.

How to Get Started?
-
Have your ICBC claim number ready. This is issued when you report your accident to ICBC.
-
Find a provider: Look for a counsellor who is part of ICBC’s Recovery Network or can bill ICBC directly. You can also ask us—we’re happy to confirm coverage for you.
-
Book your session: Provide your claim number, date of accident, and birthdate to your counsellor.

Need More Support?
If you need additional sessions after the first 12 weeks, your counsellor can work with ICBC to create a treatment plan. This ensures you get the care you need to recover fully.

Why Counselling Helps:
Car accidents can bring up strong emotions, anxiety, or stress. Counselling offers a safe space to process these feelings, develop coping strategies, and support your overall recovery.
